The National Center for School Safety (NCSS) based at the University of Michigan School of Public Health is focused on improving school safety and preventing school violence. NCSS supports schools, districts, and other entities to implement evidence-based school safety programs designed to help increase the ability of school communities to identify appropriate school safety strategies and adapt them to fit their unique contexts, including their school’s capacity, population, geography, and funding constraints.

As the State of Michigan moves toward a more carbon free agenda, the Michigan Schools Energy Cooperative (MISEC) has launched the BRITE (Bringing Renewable Innovation to Education) program to assist Michigan public schools in procuring on-site solar projects to provide more affordable electricity, reduced environmental impact, and an opportunity to showcase educational institutions as leaders in the development of renewable energy. This session will give an overview of the program, the process, and up-to-date information on the schools participating in the program. For over 20 years, MISEC has provided energy management and guidance to hundreds of districts resulting in millions of dollars in savings to invest in your students.

Using data from recent research involving long-serving rural superintendents from Idaho and Michigan, this interactive session will explore issues of gender bias in the rural superintendency. In addition to sharing experiences of women and men superintendents encountering and responding to gender bias, this session will also share data on salary discrepancies between men and women superintendents serving small and rural districts in Idaho and Michigan. The session will engage participants in a robust discussion of the realities faced by women rural superintendents, some indicators of positive change, and strategies to ensure equity in the rural superintendency.

In today's environment, developing new board members while integrating them into an effective governance team is an essential component of the superintendent’s responsibilities. To this end, the superintendent must have a comprehensive system to grow and sustain a healthy and productive governance team. From proactive outreach to board candidates, to a board member orientation process, to a strategic communication plan, to intentional engagement with school building communities, this session will equip attendees with resources to create a synergy between the superintendent and individual board members while growing a governance team that is best equipped to lead the school district. This session may be most beneficial for superintendents who are in their first few years of the superintendency.

Buckley Community Schools Superintendent Jessica Harrand and C2AE Education Market Leader Sandra March, Associate AIA, will discuss their experience in leadership positions through the development of a bond request, engaging the Buckley community, and building a consensus around necessary school district improvements. Moderating this discussion will be Steve Jurczuk, AIA, LEED AP, who served as one of the project managers supporting these two leaders through the entire process. Regardless of the outcome of the vote on August 8, Jessica and Sandra will use this session to share lessons learned and their advice for women leaders.

The session is designed as a practical overview of research findings as well as insights from the MEMSPA-MAISA-MDE sponsored Literacy Leader Network. Schools often have multiple initiatives and goals to juggle so we will examine key actions and tools leaders can use to build the internal clarity and coherence and identify the most critical things you can do now to set the stage for improvements this year (in one year). We will look at several cases to illustrate the tools and actions you can put into place to improve organizational, instructional and leadership capacity and achieve measurable gains in K-3 teaching and learning.

This session will address the question, "How do we continue to provide quality education in our rapidly changing society, with cultural "norms" being challenged, traditions being upended, people talking at each other instead of with one another with the only voice being heard is their own?" Presenters will propose that one way to address this is by developing a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) focused curriculum of caring that can impact all students. Through a DEI focused curriculum of caring, we can transform our schools so that they are culturally responsive, where students can experience a felt sense of belonging, whether they are students of marginalized communities or students in majority groups. This better prepares all students to live in an ethnically and culturally diverse world and society.

Are you interested in learning how AI can transform K-12 education? In this session, we will introduce you to a framework for integrating AI into K-12 school districts that focuses on the impact of AI on leadership, teaching and learning, and operations. You will learn about the benefits and challenges of AI in education, as well as some practical examples of how schools are using AI to enhance student outcomes, teacher effectiveness, and school efficiency. The Planning Guide for AI: A Framework for School Districts has been created in collaboration with districts across Michigan and education leadership associations starting in Spring of 2023.

As a powerful form of improvement, system accreditation uses research-based standards and evaluative criteria to examine a whole institution or system — the policies, programs, practices, learning conditions, and cultural context — to determine how well the parts work together to carry out the system’s vision. During this session, a panel of Michigan superintendents will provide insight into their system accreditation experiences and how it has impacted their continuous improvement journey.

Great leadership is contagious. Great leadership multiplies. If we are willing to set aside our personal agenda for the greater agenda of serving those around us, campuses, districts, and entire communities can be transformed. Our job as leaders, is to create an environment of safety and trust, whereby students and staff are engaged, connected, and empowered to be their best. Aligning bond programs to district and community needs and the outreach necessary to garner community support is an art and a science. In this facilitated panel discussion, you’ll hear from two superintendents along with their construction manager and architect partners who have traversed the unique twists and turns of bond program scope development. Through a series of Q&As with active audience engagement, we’ll explore best practices for fostering inclusive processes, building trust, and pursuing equity.

This session will explain the basic legal and financial structure that enable “third party” solar financings for school districts as well as the direct ownership tax credits available as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. School leaders recognizing a need to address the public conversation of AI will participate in small-group dialogue with peers and Michigan Virtual partners on how AI may address their school's unique challenges and opportunities across eight domains. With a blend of shared knowledge, introspection, and tailored advice through topical coaching, participants will develop their vision and thoughts for addressing AI in their learning community. This workshop session follows Michigan Virtual’s Hot Topic session introducing the Planning Guide for AI: A Framework for School Districts.

Does a transgender student have the right to use the bathroom or locker room of the gender with which they identify? Can a teacher refuse to use a student’s preferred name or pronouns? This session will help administrators understand state and federal law and guidance and case precedent related to transgender staff and students. Takeaways: Participants will learn the current status of how civil rights laws apply to transgender students and staff and how to apply the law to common circumstances.

Learn how Dearborn Public Schools uses a transparent budget process to explain complex accounting information to the Public. The Board of Education and administration collaborate to approve a budget that is aligned with the District Strategic Plan. Learn from professionals that will share how they communicate their budget and handle multi-year forecasting discussions with non-accountants, including tips for success. Dearborn Public Schools is the 3rd largest District in the State of Michigan with 20,000 students.Led by the Superintendent, Executive Director of Business Services and the Board of Education we have seen a tremendous positive impact with the alignment of our budget with district goals. How do school districts and Boards of Education respond to the needs of their community when confronted not only by the typical problems of a post-Covid era but also those added to the mix by state and local politics? A partnership between Farmington Public Schools and Oakland University has explored responses to that challenge. The Galileo Institute and the Center for Community Engagement at Oakland University developed a workshop for district teams (superintendent, central office, principals and board members) around issues concerning civility and engagement in public life, the need for more opportunities for conversation and dialogue, possible root causes of distrust and division as well as strategies to address these challenges. Farmington Public Schools has offered a series of "community dialogues" which have helped the district successfully navigate thorny issues by diverse groups of individuals with diverse viewpoints which they shared with attendees at the workshop and the OU Civility Day conference.

MI Student Aid is committed to supporting students in their pursuit of post-secondary education. Join us for an engaging discussion about the State's financial aid programs, student data available in the MiSSG High School Counselor Portal, and other interactive MI Student Aid resources available to assist high school counselors and support staff with inspiring and motivating students towards their path for financial success in college. Superintendents and administrators will also hear successful outreach strategies, learn about MI Student Aid’s regional approach and how they can help support high school counselors in implementing MI Student Aid services into their work with students. When a tragedy happens, district leaders and their community partners spend countless hours studying what went wrong and what could have been done differently. Unfortunately, it is too late. In this session, we will discuss the importance of conducting an after action review of emergencies that were averted and how to use the knowledge and information from the review for prevention and preparedness. We will share a framework for the review and how to put the findings into practice.

Swartz Creek Community Schools has pioneered MTSS for many years, focusing on academic and behavioral interventions. Over the last five years, the district has prioritized mental wellness at the Tier 1, 2, and 3 levels. Most recently, SC has been using weekly wellness survey data to understand the mental health of all students. This session will provide insight into the why, what, and how of making mental wellness an integral part of your MTSS plan.
