Jim Kitchen

Deputy Superintendent

Jim Kitchen is currently in his second year as Deputy Superintendent of Swartz Creek Community Schools. He has been in public education for 28 years serving as a teacher in Detroit public schools, principal of a rural, 700-student K-2 building in Fowlerville, and 11 years in Swartz Creek as a K-5 principal and high school principal. Jim has the distinct experiences of serving in an urban, rural, and suburban district along with elementary and secondary leadership knowledge. “What I have learned in my amazing journey is that kids universally need to know that you care about them, and understanding the experiences they bring to the learning environment is absolutely instrumental to their success.”

Swartz Creek Community Schools has pioneered MTSS for many years, focusing on academic and behavioral interventions. Over the last five years, the district has prioritized mental wellness at the Tier 1, 2, and 3 levels. Most recently, SC has been using weekly wellness survey data to understand the mental health of all students. This session will provide insight into the why, what, and how of making mental wellness an integral part of your MTSS plan.

Focus: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion/School Safety/Mental Health & Wellness/Teaching & Learning.
