Julie Bastow

ELA Consultant

Julie Bastow of Alpena, Michigan is a K-12 ELA Consultant for the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District (AMA ESD). Julie has been working in education for 26 years and has a Reading Specialist Masters Degree paired with an Education Specialist Degree in Curriculum K-12. Her experience includes teaching grades K-8 in a variety of settings (internationally, public, and charter) as well as having served as both a K-3 and 4-8 Literacy Coach. Julie, also is an entrepreneur who puts her teaching knowledge to practice through a one-to-one tutoring company with individually designed tutoring for students in reading and writing. Julie is married to her husband of 26 years, Joseph Bastow, and has two sons; Silas who is in his first year of University at Oxford-Brookes in the UK and Samuel who is a freshman at Alpena High School.

Building Quality Classroom Libraries [Teaching & Learning]

This session will focus on how districts/schools can harness the power of designing classroom libraries for each classroom that fosters motivation and engagement for readers through community partnerships and the commitment of ongoing allocated funds. Join us to hear about the 8 session learning series we provide for teachers that help them take their classroom libraries from "book deserts" to book rich environments that are inclusive to all students and their interests. This session aligns to the K-3 Essential Instructional Practice #8 and the new Organizational Practices #7, as well as the recommended District Commitments written by the Early Literacy Task Force.

Focus: Small & Rural Districts/Diversity, Equity, Inclusion/Teaching & Learning.

2. What community collaborations are helpful in designing a classroom library makeover initiative.
