Dr. Sue Carnell
Chief Deputy Superintendent
Dr. Carnell currently serves as chief deputy superintendent to Dr. Michael F. Rice, state superintendent at the Michigan Department of Education. Dr. Carnell has over 40 years of experience in educational and governmental settings.
Her past work experiences include Superintendent of the Westwood Community School District, Deputy Superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools, Assistant Director of Special Education, and principal for the Southgate Community School District.
Her past government experiences include serving as director of the Office of School Excellence and the Office of Community Services for the Michigan Department of Education. She also served as the Education Policy Advisor for former governor of Michigan, Jennifer M. Granholm and worked as Group Executive for former mayor of Detroit, Dave Bing.
Also, Dr. Carnell was a Fellow in The Institute for Educational Leadership’s Education Policy Fellowship Program and attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
She has a bachelor’s degree, with distinction, from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, a master’s degree, and a Ph.D. from Eastern Michigan University.
